Hi, I know that title seems scary but I wanted to share some details with you about the past few weeks and months in making this decision to leave teaching. As educators, I know we ALL have been affected by the coronavirus outbreak from learning how to run a Zoom call to managing the ups and downs of new information and safety protocols.
With my teaching contract up for renewal, I needed to start making plans. But plans are not possible in 2020. So I waited as long as I could, weighing all possible options, and decided I need to take a break from teaching in my classroom for a while. I’m heartbroken that it had to come to this and devastated to leave my students. My choice has nothing to do with my love for teaching and has EVERYTHING to do with the concern for my family’s health, mainly my newborn son who is immunocompromised.
I never thought I’d be in a position where I would have to choose my family and my mental health over my job, but teaching in person is just not an option for me right now. And I’m incredibly lucky, I will not downplay that it is nice to be able to lean into my business and still create an income for my family. Not everyone has those options and I hope you know I support all of you educators out there! I hope you do get to do what’s right for you or at least can take care of yourself and your mental health.
From the post:
“…YOU are not replaceable. You walk away from your job and they’ll replace you. But YOU are not replaceable to your loved ones. I’m fortunate to be able to work on my business full time. Those of you that desperately want out but can’t, I see you. And your feelings are valid. And you matter. Those that stay, your feelings are valid too. You are pressing on and doing an unbelievable job in unthinkable circumstances. Wherever you are in this mess, don’t forget to put yourself first. Do what’s best for you.”
