Thanksgiving Text Structures & Non-Fiction Passages

This one is for your 5th-6th grade students, hungry for Thanksgiving turkey and in need of some close reading comprehension! In this passage set, I’ve included 3 types of nonfiction text structures with a Thanksgiving theme for each. Give yourself a little break this season with this no-prep work, easy to grade, passage product.

Students will read each passage and answer the response sheet questions that follow. There are 3 total response sheets, each one for one of the three text structures. They will be assessed on their ability to compare & contrast, identify problems & solutions, and fill in a chronological timeline. They will also recognize the author’s purpose, define vocabulary words, and respond to comprehension questions.

Thanksgiving Themed Close Reading Passages

These are the 3 passages included in this engaging holiday close reading.

Thanksgiving Myths: Learn about some of the myths around Thanksgiving. A compare & contrast text structure.
Squanto & The Pilgrims: Learn about how the Pilgrims would not have survived if it hadn’t been for Tisquantum/Squanto. A problem & solution text structure.
A Thanksgiving Timeline: Learn about how the 1620 “Thanksgiving” wasn’t actually the first! A chronological text structure.
