Let me start by saying, I am all here for the Google Classroom, easy to use, digital products right now. I know my teacher friends out there have been struggling with the ups and downs of a pandemic and managing technology to teach online. My main goal is to relieve some of that stress!

Non-Fiction Problem & Solution Passages

This online passage product comes with all 12 engaging non-fiction passages, a response sheet for each passage, and 12 answer keys for easy checking and grading. The readings are geared towards 5th and 6th grade students to practice non-fiction reading and comprehension. Reading levels are from 900-1200 L. If you have advanced 4th graders, this may be great to try together or see how they do with it as assigned reading. On the flip side, use this for your older students who need a bit more practice.
The response sheets are meant to help students identify the problem and solution, increase comprehension, find and define vocabulary, and identify the author’s purpose of the text. Here are the details and examples of the response sheets provided for each text.
- Graphic Organizer – to identify the problem and solution
- Critical Thinking Piece – identify other potential solutions to the problem
- Vocabulary Check – define 4 words from the text
- Comprehension Check – answer comprehension questions about the text
- Author’s Purpose – identify the author’s purpose
I’ve written each passage to be fun and engaging for students. Each passage is only one full page long. The passages can be used as an assessment of your student’s concept understanding, sent out as homework for independent practice, or assigned in small group activities.

The passages, response, and answer sheets are available via Google Slides™ to be utilized in Google Classroom to help support you and your students in distance learning. The download includes instructions on how to access all materials and recommendations for use and assigning readings in your classroom.
